Powerhouse Energy Balls

Today I wanted to share with you a way of snacking that is NOT full of refined sugar, carbohydrates, or preservatives. These ‘Powerhouse Energy Balls’ are perfect for when you’re looking for something to pick you up and provide a boost of energy half way through your day. They are vegan, gluten free, and made to satisfy your taste buds and body.

I tend to make a batch of these on Sundays so I have snacks prepped for the week. They can be taken with you easily if you’re out and about, but they should be kept refrigerated for storing to ensure it stays fresh over time.

Lately, I’ve also been enjoying these an hour before a workout to increase focus and energy levels for a vigorous training session. Matcha, which is green tea leaves that have been ground up, can provide long lasting effects of focus and energy. It does contain some caffeine. It’s a powder made by using the whole leaves and not just a water extract of the leaves. Matcha is also full of antioxidants, and is well known for it’s anti-aging effects on the body.

The nuts and dried fruit combined in this recipe can be altered around a bit, but I found this combination to work quite well with regards to texture and taste.

Examining the nutritional content of these energy balls, they are full of healthy omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. These fatty acids are great to have with dried fruits as it slows down the release of insulin, which helps control blood sugar levels. They are also a balanced source of the other macronutrients, protein and carbohydrates. Other minerals that are high in these include manganese, iron, phosphorus.
